Justice& Peace

Dialogue will be the basic attitude to be kept within and outside the Christian community. We are challenged to practice it within the Church-Family of God as well as towards other religious beliefs. It must take place at three main levels:
between Bishop, priests, religious, pastoral agents and the lay faithful of the local churches.

between our local churches and other Christian denominations or religions.

Human Development and Justice and Peace. Being the Church at present recognized by the government only as NGO, and we ourselves as ‘social agents’ of development, our investment in the field of integral human development continues with the same intensity and sometimes with even more effort than in the past. What we still need to emphasize is a deeper self-education towards a critical reading of reality, helped in this by the individual and common study of the social doctrine of the Church as well as by keeping in touch with the country’s major changes and developments in the socio-political fields.

Aware that the modern means of communication are extremely important to foster our activities, we are aware that much

greater effort must be made in learning how to use them and multiply the sources of communication in the different fields of our

commitment. To develop local means of communication (leaflets, pamphlets, parish bulletins, video-cassettes…), to send

someone for special studies in the science of communication, to take more advantage of the Catholic Bookshop of Awasa and

Addis Ababa, to offer the possibility of more practise of ‘computer’ to those who feel the need for it and to install a computer with

internet facility at Awasa are concrete means to be implemented for the benefit of all members of the Vicariate.

The Country

Unique among African countries, the ancient Ethiopian monarchy maintained its freedom from colonial rule with the exception of a short-lived Italian occupation from 1936-41. In 1974, a military junta, the Derg, deposed Emperor Haile SELASSIE (who had ruled since 1930) and established a socialist state.
