history of our presence

Our presence in Ethiopia started when Father Leone Hanriot and Fr. Luigi Bonomi, missionaries of Comboni, came to Eritrea during the revolution of the Mahadi in the Sudan.

The Province of Ethiopia of the Comboni Missionaries was founded in 1970. It has 11 communities distruibuted in two dioceses: Addis Ababa and Hawassa

The Comboni Missionaries called to announce the Good News to all Creation. And our charism is called “First Evangelization”, going where there is no church or where people are not sufficiently evangelized, building-up the Christian community until we can give a church to the diocese with local clergy

Human promotion

Under the leadership of its Bishop, all pastoral services and developmental projects of the Vicariate are organized into departments- each of which is specialized in a certain field

ongoing formation

Initiatives of formation are being organized in collaboration with Comboni Sisters and other pastoral agents (zonal recollection days, Spiritual Exercises, workshops, General Assemblies, etc.).

justice & peace

  • Dialogue will be the basic attitude to be kept within and outside the Christian community. We are challenged to practice it within the Church-Family of God as well as towards other religious beliefs

mission animation vocation promotion

  • The situation the Catholic Church in Ethiopia is finding herself in makes mission promotion to be indispensable and urgent.

Formation of local members

The first stage upon entering is called the Postulancy. It has as its objective to prepare the postulant (or seminarian) for entry to the Novitiate (which is the next stage in formation). It offers the possibility of growing as a man and a Christian, clarifying your own vocational motivations in an environment of freedom and responsibility.                           more

The Country

Unique among African countries, the ancient Ethiopian monarchy maintained its freedom from colonial rule with the exception of a short-lived Italian occupation from 1936-41. In 1974, a military junta, the Derg, deposed Emperor Haile SELASSIE (who had ruled since 1930) and established a socialist state.

The Ethiopian Catholic Church, formerly known as the Uniat Abyssinian Church, is a Metropolitan sui iuris Eastern particular Church within the Catholic Church. .
